Obituary for John McAvoy

John McAvoy
John McAvoy, age 72, from Macomb County, passed away September 6 Th 2018.

John went to East Detroit High School, then served in the Army and started a long time career in Human Resources. He worked at Champion Spark Plug Company, for about 20 years. Later he worked at Cooper Industries primarily in North Carolina. John also worked at Wellman Friction Products in Ohio, Belden Corporation and most recently ME Global Inc in Phoenix Arizona.

His former wife Shelley McAvoy who died of pancreatic cancer in 1999 predeceased John.

Shelley and John were known as the Dynamic Duo working together and raising a loving family. They were known as one of the most pleasurable and fun couples to be around. It was always a good time at the “McAvoy House”

He is survived by his daughter Kimberly Mento and (husband Matt Mento) and his granddaughter Olivia Mento. He leaves behind his wife Kathy and her children Arik and Kira, his sister Ellen McAvoy, an Uncle Marvin Robertson, and many nieces and nephews.

John’s nieces and nephews knew him as “Uncle Punky”. He got that nickname when he was just a small child and his sister Ellen called him a cute little pumpkin. They would describe him as a kind and fun Uncle.

John enjoyed all kinds of sports. He was particularly fond of NASCAR, golf, baseball, and hockey in his younger days. He loved to cook and entertain family and friends. Back in the day, John loved his “Dewar’s on the Rocks”. John loved visiting Las Vegas and playing Black Jack.

He loved it so much he eloped with his present wife Kathy back in 2002 in Las Vegas.

John was a loving husband, father, and friend. All who knew him will miss him.
