Ruth Carolyn Gutowski, longtime resident of Fraser, died peacefully October 3, 2020. She was 97 years of age.

Ruth was born in Fraser, Michigan, daughter of the late Edward and Sarah (Kandt) Faulmann. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church. A farm girl, Ruth graduated from Fraser High School in 1941. She was united in marriage to her beloved husband, Edward Albert Gutowski, on January 15, 1944 in St. John Lutheran Church of Fraser. The couple built their home in Fraser; and was blessed with two wonderful sons whom she loved and cherished. Ruth made a loving and welcoming home and raised her children with Christian values. In 1966, Ruth became the first female barber in Macomb County. The couple owned and operated the Clinton Acres Barber Shop in Clinton Township for many years. In her younger years, Ruth, along with her husband, was very active at St. John Lutheran Church and enjoyed being a member of the 55+ Club and the Fraser and Clinton Township Seniors. They also enjoyed bowling for many years. Ruth always enjoyed eating and her one glass of wine in the evening. She was always up to date with current events. She will always be known for being independent, her strength, her generosity and her warm smile that would always greet you. She will be deeply missed and her light will continue to glow in our hearts forever.

Ruth is the loving wife of the late Edward; dearest mother of Bob (Sharon) and Gary Gutowski; cherished grandmother of Kelly (Nick), Jason (Angela), Jennifer, Jill and Jonathan; great grandmother of Collin, Savannah and Grayson; dear sister of the late Raymond and Edward. She is also survived by her foster sisters, Barbara and Margaret.

Visitation will be held at Faulmann & Walsh Golden Rule Funeral Home, 32814 Utica Road, Fraser, Tuesday from 4pm - 8pm. Visitation will be held on Wednesday at St. John Lutheran Church of Fraser at 10am until the time of service at 10:30am. Burial will follow at Clinton Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be addressed to St. John Lutheran Church. Share memories at

My sympathies for the family. Judy and I both said we would have come to the service had we been in the area, so sorry we missed it. We were so surprised and happy to see you at dad’s viewing. I will always remember Aunt Ruth from when we played at the farm as kids. You remain in my thoughts and prayers.

Wow, not sure where to begin how to tell you when and how this woman (my ex mother-in-law) changed mine and my children's lives. I married Gary in 1978 after meeting him the prior year, many don't realize that I brought a 6 month old beautiful little girl along with the marriage. From the day Ruth and Eddie met my daughter Jennifer they were in love. I cannot tell you all the stories we have with grandma and the kids, from swimming, driving on the tractor, baking cookies, etc. She was always there when we needed her. I was working at the time and she would keep the kids with her. Ruth welcomed me and Jennifer into her home and never looked back. I was given a baby shower, wedding shower, parties, events, beer tent hopping, polish dancing, fireworks, swimming, and a multitude of other memories I have. Ruth was responsible for helping me make the transition from single mom to a married woman. This page isn't big enough to tell you how much Ruth meant to me and my children. My children adored their grandma and never hesitated to let her know how much she meant to them, and Ruth always made sure they knew how much she loved being a grandma. Even though the marriage didn't work out, a true testament to Ruth is that she always put her grandchildren first and made sure to remain in communication with me and never mention or remind me that I wasn't married to her son any longer. We have all remained friends and family for our children and grandchildren which means my children have always had their grandparents at their events. Grandma G wanted to be at every event the kids had, football games, softball games, bingo at fraser fair, and of course her bowling league. Some people have a hard time believing she is my ex mother-in-law with how much I talk about her and our adventures to Lexington. Everyone that met Ruth is going to miss her, but I know that there will not be a day that goes by that my me, my children and grandchildren do not have a memory or story of their grandma for the rest of our lives. Thank you Ruth for making my life much easier when I truly needed the help. RIP beautiful lady - All My Love, Carol

Ruth was a pleasure to meet and get to know during her time at Karen's Kare House. I will always remember her laughter, silly personality, and getting picked on almost every day :)
I will truly miss hearing "oh brother" and "oh boy", listening to her stories about picking berries on her farm, and hearing her laughter when I told her to "hold your bridges" while lifting her up in the chair so her pants wouldn't slide down! I will always remember the first woman barber of Macomb County!
She was extremely headstrong and such a joyful woman to be around, and I hope she has found her peace in Heaven.
