Obituary for Charles "Bill" Mathews Jr.

Charles William (Bill) Mathews Jr., 69, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born Dec. 27, 1948, in Detroit, the son of Marie (Sieger) and C.W. Mathews Sr. He moved with his family from Detroit to Clinton Township and then Fraser, where he attended St. John Lutheran School and Fraser High School, graduating in 1966.

He met his wife, the former Mona Bachman of Mt. Clemens, at Macomb Community College where they were both students. They were married in 1971 at St. Thecla Church in Mt. Clemens and resided in Sterling Heights. He was a life-long member of St. John Lutheran Church, as well a long-time member of the National Board of Realtors & Board of Appraisers.

Early on, Bill was employed in the Floriculture program at the Macomb Career Prep Center in Sterling Heights. For the majority of his work years, he was a realtor and appraiser with RE/MAX real estate in Clinton Township.

He was always working on home repairs or home projects, emulating television’s Bob Villa. He enjoyed going to The Henry Ford & Greenfield Village, where he and Mona were members, and taking his kids and grandkids there to teach them about and share his love of history. He also loved to travel throughout Michigan, garden, work on cars, read and watch history documentaries and spent his retirement years focused on his family, taking as much time with his grandchildren as he could.

He is survived by his wife, Mona; two children, Kristopher of Livonia and Lauren (Bret) Samyn of Grosse Pointe; sisters Nancy Mathews of Escanaba, Judy (Jim) Lapak of South Carolina, and Tracey (Brian) Fish of Bloomfield Hills; mother-in-law Dolores Bachman; grandchildren Berkley and Lyla Samyn and Emilia Mathews; five nieces, four nephews and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, John Bachman; a sister and brother-in-law, Jill and Eugene Miller; a niece, Jennifer Kless; and his aunts and uncles.

Visitation and memorial services are planned for Tuesday, Dec. 4, at St. John Lutheran Church in Fraser; visitation from noon to 1 p.m. followed by services. Arrangements are through Faulmann-Walsh Funeral Home of Fraser.

Memorial gifts in Bill’s name may be directed to St. John Branching Out Building Campaign.
