Margarete was born on June 11,1920 in Breslau, Germany, the daughter of Friedrich and Elfriede Alexy. She married Hans-Joachim Wasner in 1937. She died at Independence Village of Brighton Valley on April 25, 2020 after several months of hospice care.

She and her children fled in January 1945 during the Russian siege of Breslau, and found shelter near Schweinfurt, Germany, where Hans was stationed. The family emigrated to Detroit in 1952 as refugees of war. After a divorce from Hans, she married Vernon Myers in 1958, living in Roseville for 40 years. After Vern’s death in 2004, she and Hans remarried and together they moved to Independence Village of Brighton Valley in 2005. She remained there after Hans’ death in 2012.

Margarete was a resilient woman of strong faith and conviction. She taught Sunday School, sang in the Choir and was Treasurer for many years at Bethany Lutheran Church, Roseville. She was a strong supporter of Lutheran Social Services of MI. After moving to Brighton, she joined St George Lutheran Church. She enjoyed studies and worship with a variety of Christian faith traditions at Independence Village.

She was a working Mom for many years, serving as a travel agent to the German-American community in the Detroit area. Among others, she worked for Travel Charter, Spiekermann Travel, and DeWalt Travel. Her work took her to 58 counties and many of the world’’s great places.

As a long time resident of Independence Village, Margarete was active with the Resident Council and served several terms as President.

As a Wasner family matriarch, Margarete kept up with an ever growing list of birthdays and anniversaries over extended generations, and sent well wishes to all. She loved her family, had a strong sense of right and wrong and an abiding concern for those struggling in society.

She was preceded in death by husbands Hans J Wasner and Vernon E Myers, brother Guenther Alexy and son Hartmuth Wasner and stepsons Michael and Timothy Myers.

She is remembered lovingly by her children, Capt. Hans Wasner(Mary) of Fort Worth, Texas, Helga Wetzel (Dr.Robert-deceased) of Merced, California, Harold (Alinda) of Beverly Hills, MI, and Dr. Jim Wasner of Chicago, Illinois; and by 9 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren and many, many friends.

Funeral arrangements are by the Faulman and Walsh Golden Rule Funeral Home of Fraser, MI. Remains will be at Resurrection Cemetery, Clinton Township, Mi.
A memorial service will be held virtually on June 11, 2020. See information below on joining the service.

I am so sorry for your loss. I enjoyed knowing Margarete and your family over the years at Independence Village. Her faith and her love for Christ was amazing. She would make me laugh during our outings to Frankenmuth with the community. I will miss her laughter and smile but I know that I will see her again in heaven, blessings Alissa Secco
