Ida Elizabeth Watkins (nee Merritt), a resident of Eastpointe since 1954, passed away peacefully at Fraser Villa on Tuesday, December 29, 2020. She was 101 years old.
Ida was born on December 7, 1919 in Detroit to Frank P. and Gertrude L. (nee Shindel) Watkins. She was united in marriage to her beloved husband, William Watkins, on November 7, 1942 in Detroit where they made their home until moving to Eastpointe in 1954. Together, the couple was blessed with three wonderful children; John, William, and Richard. Ida was an extremely talented organist and pianist from a young age. Her father worked on the railroad and she would often accompany him on trips and would play the piano along the way at each stop. Ida had also been invited to study music at The Julliard School. She also always volunteered her voice for any church choir that needed her and would also play the piano or organ at many churches in the area. Ida was also a very talented at knitting and crocheting, making countless pieces for family and friends.
Even into her final days, Ida always kept her mind sharp and always kept up with current events. She always knew what was going on in the world and always had an opinion on everything that was happening. Ida also knew her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Ida loved the Lord; and it was through her faith that got her through all of life's ups and downs. She was a intelligent and faithful woman who lived life with love and purpose. Ida always enjoyed the comfort brought to her by her pastors throughout the years. Above everything, Ida loved every moment of being a mother and grandmother. She was a truly courageous woman who would let nothing stop her, even into the final days of her life. Her smile and kindness will truly be missed by all who knew her, but memories of her will continue on in all who loved her.
Ida is cherished mother of William (Deborah) Watkins and Richard (Victoria) Watkins; loving mother-in-law of Carol Watkins; beloved grandmother of nine and great-grandmother of fourteen. She was preceded in death by her husband William, son John, and her parents.
A committal service will be held on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, MI at 10am.
