Hans Werner Goetz, resident of Clinton Township, passed peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family on April 23, 2021. He was 79 years of age.

Hans was born on December 19, 1941 in Hamburg, Germany, son of the late Johann and Elfriede (Weichmann) Goetz. Hans spent his entire career in the tool and die industry as a draftsman, estimator and purchasing agent, retiring from McQuade Industries in the early 2000’s. In his retirement years, he took great joy in meeting with friends to share a meal and catch up on current events. Hans had a passion for all things collectible from carnival glass to sports memorabilia. One of his finer characteristics was a well-honed sense of humor, with a particular passion for Laurel and Hardy, a member of their fan club for many years. Hans was a unique individual, leaving his imprint on all who met him and will be remembered for the good times.

Hans was also a passionate Red Wings fan from his very earliest days after arriving in America. The highlight of his fandom was being present for their cup winning sweep in Game 4 in 1997 and attending the 2009 Winter Classic at Chicago’s Wrigley Field. Hans’ two greatest joys in life were food and music. No matter where you were throughout the Midwest, Hans always knew a great place to eat just around the corner. His musical tastes were wide ranging, from opera to classical to country and western with favorites including The Three Tenors, Sarah Brightman, Leonard Cohen, Rufus and Martha Wainwright, the Cowboy Junkies, Kris Kristofferson, Emmy Lou Harris, John Prine and Harry Chapin. His love of music was inherited from his mother and was passed on to his children. One of their earliest memories being lying on the living room floor, listening to the stereo for hours in the dark. In retirement, Hans placed ever increasing priority on spending time with family. Highlights included a trip to visit his sister in Arizona and several cross-county trips with his son and grandsons, seeing mountains for the first time in his life; something he thought that he would never do. Hans particularly cherished visits to Chicago and time spent with his grandsons.

Hans is the dearest father of Daniel Goetz and Lisa (Brian) Scobie; cherished grandfather of Noah and Jacob Goetz; much loved brother of Ingrid Cretal and Gudrun Goetz, treasured uncle and great uncle to many nieces and nephews and especially beloved “grandfather role” to Madison and Makenzie.

A memorial service and celebration of Hans’ life will take place later this year when we can gather safely. Please take the time to share your stories and remembrances with his family at

I am truly saddened by the loss of my dear Uncle Hans. I have so many wonderful memories growing up with him as his niece. He had a great sense of humor which always made any family gathering fun. I will always remember the holidays, trips up north, the festivals our family went to, and other family gatherings. I feel so blessed to have him as my uncle. My condolences to Dan and Lisa, his grandkids, family, friends, and anyone who is suffering from this loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Rest in Peace, Uncle Hans. As I have always said to you, "Love you." Renee

Han’s and I were the best of friends. We met in the mid 90’s while I was employed with Kennametal(tooling) and he worked for McQuade industries as a purchasing agent. We met at Red Wing hockey games as we were both big hockey fans. Also we had an interest in the minor league hockey team The Plymouth Whalers. Myself Han’s & his nephew Duane went to many Whaler games including playoff games. Han’s was a sincere honest and generous person. We shared many good memories as we attended hockey, baseball and sporting card shows together. Cheryl & I made a trip to Michigan in July of 2019 where we attended a Tiger baseball game.. We also met for breakfast at a Bob Evans before I left to come back to Texas. We were so happy we could meet with Han’s during that trip. I will miss him very much. Our condolences from David Fredendall & Cheryl McCormack.

So sorry to hear the passing of one of my Fathers Hockey buddies. Hans and Dad loved the Red Wings and could be seen at the Joe together often. Hans and I met because of my Dad and when Dad passed in 2009 Hans and I stayed in touch and loved to meet at local restaurants to enjoy a meal and catch up on life. I am deeply sorry to hear of his passing and I am sure that he will be missed by everyone. God Bless his family
